The action, comedy, and romantic series Zombie Loan is our 17th anime for our advent calendar.

Michiru Kita is a special girl who possesses Shinigami Eyes, a power which allows her to see a person’s nearness to their destined death by seeing a ring, invisible to normal people, around the person’s neck. When a person is marked to die, a gray ring appears, which darkens over time. Once the ring turns completely black, the person dies. Chika Akatsuki and Shito Tachibana, two boys in her class, both have black rings around their necks, but to her surprise, they are not yet dead. It is revealed that after a tragic accident that was supposed to kill them both, the two boys made a deal with a secret loan office called the Zombie-Loan. In return for keeping them alive, the two have to hunt zombies for the loan office. When Michiru gets involved with them, she finds that her life has just become more complicated.

The series ran for 13 episodes in 2007.

Day 16 of our advent calendar! It’s the comedy-drama, action, and adventure series Michiko to Hatchin. Hatchin is a girl raised by strict foster parents who has long given up her dreams of freedom. Michiko is a sexy criminal who escapes from a supposedly inescapable prison. When she suddenly enters Hana’s life, these two very different women set off on a journey across a lawless land in search of a missing man from both their pasts.

It originally ran for 22 episodes between 2008 and 2009. The studio is Manglobe.

Day 15 brings you Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. You do not need to have watched Fullmetal Alchemist (the original series) as Brotherhood will start from the beginning of the story. FMA: Brotherhood is an adventure story, with science fiction and steampunk elements.

Two brothers lose their mother to an incurable disease. With the power of “alchemy”, they use taboo knowledge to resurrect her. The process fails, and as a toll for using this type of alchemy, the older brother, Edward Elric loses his left leg while the younger brother, Alphonse Elric loses his entire body. To save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm and is able to affix his brother’s soul to a suit of armor. With the help of a family friend, Edward receives metal limbs – “automail” – to replace his lost ones. With that, Edward vows to search for the Philosopher’s Stone to return the brothers to their original bodies, even if it means becoming a “State Alchemist”, one who uses his/her alchemy for the military.

FMA: Brotherhood is produced by Bones. It has been ongoing since April 5 of this year.

Ten years ago, an inscrutable and abnormal territory known as Hell’s Gate appeared in Tokyo, altering the sky and wreaking havoc on the landscape. The heavenly bodies disappeared, replaced by false stars. During this time, people possessing various special abilities emerged, each capable of different supernatural feats – these are known as Contractors. Each fake star has a corresponding Contractor, which reacts to their activities. As such, Contractors are usually identified by their star’s Messier catalogue number. Kept secret from the masses, these individuals are known to murder in cold blood, smothering unnecessary emotions with logic and rationale. Their incredible abilities, however, are gained at the cost of their humanity – Contractors are thus named because of an involuntary compulsion to “pay the price” each time their power is used, which can range from eating particular foods and completing meaningless tasks, to self-harm and having their bodies change in peculiar ways. Various nations and organizations around the world train and utilize Contractors as spies and assassins, resulting in violent battles for valuable objects and information.

This is Darker than Black, and it’s the anime series for day 14 of our anime advent calendar. The series fits into the genres of neo-noir and supernatural. It originally ran in 2007 for 25 episodes, and there is a sequel that is currently ongoing. The studio is the well known Bones.

Today brings you the fantasy and romantic drama DN Angel. Daisuke Niwa is a 14-year-old boy who has a special genetic ability: whenever he sees or thinks about his crush, Risa Harada, he turns into the infamous phantom thief Dark. Satoshi Hiwatari is a student at the same school as Daisuke and the Harada twins, as well as the Commander of the police force who is heading the investigation on Dark. He is also member of the Hikari family, a clan of artists which has opposed the Niwa family of thieves for centuries.

DN Angel runs for 26 episodes, and was produced by the studios Dentsu and Xebec. It originally ran in 2003.

On the 12th day of KAF’s advent calendar, one episode of Genshikan! Genshiken follows the lives of a group of college students drawn together by their shared hobbies, and the trials and adventures associated with being otaku. The story begins with the introduction of Kanji Sasahara, a shy, confidence-lacking freshman who on club day at university, decides to join a club he would actually enjoy, Genshiken. Over his four years at Shiiou University, Sasahara comes to accept himself for who he is and loses the inhibitions and guilt he once felt and associated with otaku culture, becoming an enthusiastic club member, and for a time, a capable club president. As the story of Genshiken progresses, focus is also placed on Saki Kasukabe, a determined non-otaku who initially struggles to drag her boyfriend out of the club, and Chika Ogiue, a self-professed otaku-hater who feels a deep-seated shame and self-loathing toward her own interests and hobbies.

Genshiken is a comedy, with “slice of life” elements. It originally ran for 12 episodes in 2004. There is a sequel, an OVA, and the original manga.

Moyasimon: Tales of Agriculture (also referred to as Moyashimon) is the free anime download for day 11 of our anime advent calendar. It is a comedy, but you might also learn something from it too! Read on…

The story follows the life of Tadayasu Sawaki, a first-year college student at an agricultural university, who has the unique ability to see and communicate with micro-organisms and bacteria. Additionally, these organisms look much different to him, and much larger, than what can be seen under a microscope by normal people. This ability has brought him a bit of fame as when he entered the university, Tadayasu discovered that one of the professors there, Keizō Itsuki, already knew about his gift via Tadayasu’s grandfather. Professor Itsuki’s coworker Haruka Hasegawa has trouble believing what Tadayasu claims at first, but later comes to accept it. Tadayasu enters the university with his good friend Kei Yūki whose family runs a sake brewery. The Department of Agriculture building on the school’s campus is a near identical replica of the real life University of Coimbra in Portugal. The flag at the top of the clock tower also has the same color scheme as the Portuguese flag.

Enjoy the anime for the 10th day of our 2009 advent calendar, where we post an anime or manga series everyday for you to check out! Those who like comedy and romance might like today’s pick: Kimi no Todoke. Having premiered just last October, the TV series is pretty new. The manga has been ongoing since 2006.

Sawako Kuronuma, called Sadako by her classmates for her resemblance to the character from Ring, has always been feared and misunderstood because of her appearance. There are rumors that Sawako can see ghosts and curse people. But when her idol, popular boy Kazehaya, begins talking with her, everything changes. She finds herself in a new world, trying to make friends and talking to different people and she can’t thank Kazehaya enough for giving her these opportunities. Slowly, but surely, a sweet love is blossoming between the two as they will overtake any circumstance or clear obstacles in their way.

The anime series was produced by Sunrise, and even though it is more than a decade old now, it is still ever fun to watch.

The 8th day of our advent calendar brings you School Days. Makoto Ito rides the train to and from school every day. However, at the beginning of his second term, he falls in love with a beautiful girl that also rides the train. Unfortunately, she barely knows of his existence. Her name is Kotonoha Katsura, and though they attend the same school, they are not in the same class. In an attempt to catch her eye, Makoto enlists the aid of a close female friend of his: Sekai Saionji. She helps him, despite the fact that she — unbeknownst to Makoto — is in love with him. Thus the three are bound in a love triangle of life changing proportions.

Warning: This anime series contains mature themes, including graphic violence and sexual themes, but it does not contain nudity.
